Company History
- Changing with the industry for over 40 years.
- The 1950's
- US&S was founded in 1952 by Charles Edwin "Ed" Beatty as a proprietorship.
Ed Beatty had been the Utilities Director for the City of Middletown, but left
that position to start a business supplying utility materials, and acting as a
manufacturers representative for a water meter manufacturer, Buffalo Meter.
The business was run our of a small building on Winton St. in Middletown. Soon
after, his sons Gale E. Beatty, and David G. "Jerry" Beatty, entered the
business.
- The 1960's
- In 1960 the company needed a larger building, and purchased an old
blacksmith shop at 233 S. Main St., in Monroe, Ohio. At this point the company
was selling water meters and meter setting materials, and had a water meter
repair shop . In February of 1962, the company was Incorporated in Ohio, and
named Utility Service & Supply, Inc., with Ed Beatty as President, Gale Beatty
as Vice-President / Treasurer, and Jerry Beatty as Vice-President and
Warehouse manager.
Ed Beatty retired from the business in 1964, selling his interest to his two
sons Gale, and Jerry, who served as officers and directors of the corporation.
As the company grew, additions were made to the building and additional
product lines were taken on. In the 60's the company had taken on selling CB
radios and equipment, but later dropped this line when it no longer appealed
to contractors.
- The 1970's
- In the 70's the company took on the sewer and drainage pipe lines in
addition to waterworks products. In 1974, Gale's son Joseph E. Beatty, entered
the business in counter sales, and progressed to Warehouse Manager, and
eventually became Purchasing Agent, Corporate Secretary, and currently Vice
President.
- The 1980's
- In 1986, Joe become a shareholder of the corporation. In 1988 Mark P.
Beatty, Jerry's son, entered the business. In 1989,
he also became a shareholder of the corporation. By 1989, the company had
outgrown the facilities in downtown Monroe, and arranged for a new building to
be constructed on an industrial park lot, which is our current home office and
Ohio warehouse location. The
facility is located on this lot, and is leased from J&M Beatty Company, a
separate partnership owned by Joe and Mark Beatty.
- The 1990's
- Gale Beatty retired from the business in 1990, selling his share of the
company to Joe. At this time, Jerry was elected as President, Joe as
Vice-President, and Mark as Secretary/Treasurer. In 1992, the company decided
to make a commitment to selling the new Water Meter Reading Technologies and
became a certified distributor of these products. Our first sale in the line
came in 1994 and it appears to be an area of much future growth. In 1998 we
opened a branch in Morehead, Kentucky. The Morehead Office is located on
US 60 near the village of Farmers, Kentucky.
- 2000 and the Future
- Utility Service & Supply continues to grown and evolve with the industry,
and currently employs over 22 people covering the states of Ohio, Kentucky,
and West Virginia. In 2006, the company took on Flow Metrix Leak detection
equipment, and in 2007 started representing Dexter-Fortson SCADA/Telemetry
sytstems.
